Part 1 of Triptych Passages
Oil paint and mixed media on plastered wooden panel. Varnished with traditional beeswax.
Work inspired by painting in an extraordinarily atmospheric house which had been empty for years and yet still contained the last inhabitants' belongings. It was impossible not to be drawn into thoughts of life and death, our short time on this earth and what it all means. Elements, part 1 of the triptych Passages, is an attempt to convey pre-birth, the primary stage of the life process when we are immersed in the elements surrounding us while we're each a; "swimmer in the secret sea" (William Kotzwinkle), floating silently between worlds.
As I reworked aspects of this painting for my most recent exhibition, I noticed that the face had taken on features of a small stone buddha head in my studio.
